Steel Forests is my in-development post-apocalyptic TTRPG inspired by Fallout, Mad Max, and STALKER. I’m hoping to release it some time before I die.
I’ve already written a couple devblogs about it, but I learned that I’m much more interested in writing the game than writing about the game.
- Steel Forests: Rocky Mountain Waste Disposal
- Monster of the Week: Introduction, Stat Block Template, and the Commoner
- Monster of the Week: Lesser Zombie
- Monster of the Week: The Ranger
- Steel Forests Prototype Settlement Rules
Nearly two years have passed since that first Monster of the Week post, and I’ve rewritten the core mechanics as many times. The work continues, and I’ll reveal it when it’s ready (TM).
Until then, enjoy this flash fiction about one of the game’s built-in factions, the New Republic of Texas (I wonder where he got inspired to write that).
“Before the war, you’d hear about how Texas would reclaim its former glory and secede from the Union. This wasn’t an idea you ever associated with serious people, just loons that got a southbound blood rush out of overpressured brass, watching the little guy get squashed, and the flag of the losing army of another state some 1300 miles across the country.
But it was that kind of Old World loser that was most prepared for the world after. Mostly because he was looking forward to it and made a few lucky side bets that it’d come around in his lifetime. All they ever really wanted was to dress up in big boots, shiny badges, and 10-gallon hats and get their own shot at Manifest Destiny.
Some say they’re bringing law to the wasteland — restoring the peace of the old world. There’s some truth to that, but the Republic’s core is violence and thievery sanctioned by ink on paper and carried out by cruel men playing cowboy.”
